<hi style=afpcap>The DC-4 was redesigned by Douglas with an elongated fuselage and other refinements to become the DC-6, with military interest being shown for the Military Air Transport Service (MATS). The first aircraft was ordered in 1946 as a VC-118 for Presidential use to replace a VC-54. This was followed by 100 C-118A Liftmasters which were supplied to the Atlantic and Pacific Divisions of MATS. The illustration shows an Atlantic Division C-118A on a test flight overflying the southern California coastline. </hi>
